Jim
and Linda were born in in Watford England , emigrated to Oz in 1966 and have
never regretted the move. Jim is a Bricklayer / Builder by trade but has fished
all his life, from the coarse fishing in the lakes and canals to spinning for
trout (much to the annoyance of the gamekeeper) in the clear chalk streams around
Hertfordshire. On moving to South Oz he fell in love with the sportsfishing
concept, fishing for Blue Salmon, Mullaway and Snapper and the delicious table
fish King George Whiting.
The real fishing started when he started travelling North, chasing Barra, Gts
and Queenies etc, fishing at Darwin, Arnheim Land ,Cape York etc, but on finding
Hinchinbrook Channel and the surrounding creeks they decided to sell up and
move, and now reside in the beautiful Kennedy Valley, where they have lived
for the past eight years.
Linda works for an Indigenous Organization as well as doing the books for Jim
and enjoys a day out on the water.
A typical day out is a 7 am start (depending on tides)
from Port Hinchinbrook or 8 am from the resort at Cape Richards. Normally we
target Barra, searching for that elusive fish over one metre . When fishing
in the Creeks of Missionary Bay theres a good chance of some Mangrove
Jack, Estuary Cod as well as Barra, GTs. Queenies can be caught in the
main channel. Tuna and Bonito etc, can be seen chopping up bait around the Brook
Islands and can be good fun for the fly fisherman.
Lunch and drinks are provided and we usually stop at Macushla Pt or the Haven,
(where a swim in the freshwater creek can be taken) using the facilities there.
Fishing finishes around 5 pm depending once again on tides and wind, they also
determine where we fish, as there is a lot of shallow water in and around the
Channel. The nice thing about fishing around the Island is the beautiful scenery
from Mt Bowen to the Cardwell Ranges.
