A
Crazy 3 hrs.
Well the school
holidays have finished and I didn’t see the dynamic duo of James Lamen
and Ashley Dansie, they were always “First cab Of the Rank” to go
fishing.
It reminded me of the last time we fished together, they had come round
on the Friday night to see if they could fish with me on the Saturday. I
told them we could fish in the morning weather permitting, well Saturday
arrives the boys are here early but its raining, all be it lightly.
I tried to put it of but they were keen as, so of we went with the
proviso we came home if it started to “bucket down”. I wasn’t going far
Just fishing around Hecate Pt, then onto the rock bars as the tide
dropped.
We started fishing the Mangroves on the mainland side first and straight
away I knew we were in for a good session as the roots were full of
“Jelly Prawns” and could see the occasional flash of a feeding Barra!
Ashley was in first, he commandeers the front of the boat arguably the
“best seat in the house”, except of course when you are the designated
lure un-hooker! No sooner had his lure hit the water and it was smashed,
in the excitement Ash has heaved back, the lure and the fish came flying
out from under the snag and parted company in mid-air! James and I were
soon in touch with some smaller fish, and had a bit of fun letting them
leap about, both were boated and both about 50cm,nice looking fish.
We only had a small window to fish this spot as the tide was running out
and it was only a 2.10 m high we opted to fish the mangroves on the
Island side as whilst we catching some nice fish they were all around
50cm. James was keen to take one home for tea and to hook something of a
decent size.
The water was only about 80cm,just right for the spot we wanted to fish,
we have to move fairly quickly with the tide as it is easy to get
stranded or at best get out and push. We were soon working the exposed
snags, and were in to a small fish from the back of a sunken log. James
had worked the front and was in also, something a bit better and was
enjoying the tussle but they were soon boated, pictured and released,
good fish but nothing special. Ashley was fishing well but getting no
hook ups he’d been smashed a couple of times and had some rolls but was
a good fisherman out of luck.
I was out of luck also as I had been working my lure away from the snag
when a big old bucket mouth Barra grabbed my “B52” right at the boat.
Well he didn’t stay connected very long as he was on a “short leash” and
soon pulled the hooks. The look on the boys face’s was worth bottling
they were astounded, they were raving on how he was at least a 1m long
etc etc, exciting stuff. In hindsight I should have released the thumbar
and let him have some line but you know what they say about hindsight?
I was soon back in the action as I had hooked a nice size Barra from out
of a small drain, not a bad fish. I was keen to boat this one so I
“snigged “ him out to the open using the electric, I know its cheating
but I wanted to get a pic of both the boys holding a nice fish for the
album. He was soon at the boat and measured 64cm not as big as I thought
but still was worth the pic with the boys.
Ashley mean while had hooked and boated a couple of nice fish but no
keepers, we decided to swing round to the rock bars as the electric was
stirring up the mud, a sure sign it was time to move.
We had all been fishing with shallow divers, I was using gold “B52”, and
James a multi colored “Spearhead” and Ash a small “Gold Bomber”. I enjoy
fishing the rock-bars as you know when you hook up, they are going to
leap out of the water as its always shallow and they have know where to
go but up. I worked my lure slow past an oyster covered rock and felt
the tell tale bump of an inquisitive Barra, I made the mistake of
mentioning that I had a touch and no sooner were the words out of my
mouth, James is in there and hooked up to a nice fish, it looked to be a
good size so once again I went to the electric and pulled it out into
the open to give James a chance at keeper. This fish was working hard
against the drag, long hard runs with not a lot of Arial activity, it
was soon to the boat and measured a healthy 69cm,Jame’s personal best.
Ash was also keen to get a keeper so he was “flogging the water to foam”
as we say and was duly rewarded with a good fish. hooked right next to
one of the larger rocks, and it was trying to get back there, really
bending Ash’s rod over (it has no back-bone) but with a bit of “pump and
wind” it to was at the boat, measuring 62cm.
By this time the tide had really run out and it was time to move, whilst
it had stop raining the sky had that pinkish look that said sooner or
later it was going to turn it on, so we decided to call it a day. Just
as well we did because by the time we reached the boat ramp it was
teeming and did so for the rest of the w\end.
Not a bad session really about 3hrs, 8 fished boated and we must have
seen a dozen or more fish (I had my guides glasses’ on, Lumpy reckons we
have Barra painted on the inside!) and all within 15 minutes of the boat
ramp.
