The New
Quintrex Hornet
- The Real Deal
(Maybe!)
When I
received the replacement boat the first thing I noticed how much wider
and how much more freeboard there was. It looked pretty much the same
except it had the “Millennium” hull and when checking it out how much
more solid it was.
After getting it fitted out at “Hunts”, I was keen to try it out, that’s
when I found out how much more metal was in it, the 40hp was struggling
to get it up with 2 + 1 onboard!
So back to “Hunts “ we go and get a 50 hp on , even though its only
rated to 40hp. Well the 50 is only a hotted up 40! I had been using it
for a while and I found it rode a bit high in the front, so I had a
“Perma-trim” fitted on the 50 that did the job.
I had been using steady for about 12mths when I notice the seats were
starting to move, they were welded to the cross thwarts. On closer
inspection, the welds had broken away and need re-welding, they were
only welded to 1.97mm aluminium on the cross thwarts. That was
disappointing especially as I had pointed out to Quintrex this was the
weakest link!
I had it strengthen on both of them, cost around $200 so no arm and a
leg, but disappointing just the same on a boat only a year old.
Well we are further down the track and nothing else has gone wrong,
let’s hope it stays that way. I find the boat very good to handle rides
higher on the chop, so less banging, all in all a useful boat. Very
stable when fishing but receptive to wind when on the drift but you get
that with all punts (No Keel!).
Wayne and Morgs are happy with their replacement boats so all good here!
To those guys who are still emailing me about the older punts, keep at
Quintrex, it seems the law says No one is allowed to sell an un-sea
worthy boat and that’s what they were!
Safe Boating and I’ll See Ya on the Water and remember “Fish for the
future, Practice Catch and Release!"
